Aladdin, a simple-hearted thief living in the streets, sets out to discover his destiny. One night he dreams of a lamp that grants three wishes. He tries to return the lamp to its owner, but is transformed into the powerful Genie, a secret agent who must rescue Princess Jasmine from Jafar. Genies have been around since the beginning of time, the secret of the Djinns is revealed to him. Genie returns to the palace of the Sultan with an army of acrobats, dancing girls and a mysterious raven. Aladdin can access the Genie’s power and is re-named the Prince of the City of Agrabah. Beauty, the world’s most valuable pearl, is stolen from the Palace. To find it, Al must go treasure hunting in the Grand Prix de Agrabah in the desert. Jafar lures Aladdin to a trap and reveals the secret of the Djinns to him. Jasmine must save Aladdin and his fellow Genie seekers by finding the key to the door of the palace.
Robin Williams delivers a brilliant performance as Genie. In the beginning, when Aladdin awakens from his adventure with Genie, he is very amusing – it’s like he’s a new person. But it turns out that he’s a classic genie and an old friend. He knows Aladdin and immediately gets to work on his third wish. Any actor who has ever voiced a talking animal knows that animals are a lot of fun to work with. This is a great performance. There are two parts in it that will be terribly irritating to kids. The first, some particularly bad language, and the second, a bit of the torture scene with Jafar. The rest, however, is good. It’s a good cartoon that should entertain kids of all ages. If it was it for Disney and Williams, it could be a very good one. Unfortunately, it was still Aladdin, and Aladdin is the worst thing Disney has ever done.
