Harriet Ewing (22 August 1912 – 6 January 1996) was an Australian artist and illustrator.

Biography

Ewing was born Harriet Jessie Ewing on 22 August 1912 in Queenstown, Tasmania, Australia to Florence and Ernest Ewing. In 1934 she won the Tasmanian state scholarship for painting. She studied at the National Gallery Art School in London from 1937 to 1938. While in London she was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours from 1938 to 1941. She married fellow artist George Salter in 1939. She died in Melbourne on 6 January 1996.

Works

Ewing’s most notable work is the 40-page book The White Swans, with co-illustrator Alfred Duggan, in 1936. It is an account of a trip through western Australia to investigate the birthing habits of swans. Ewing and Duggan documented their adventures and observations in detailed watercolours. The images in The White Swans were displayed on a “New Art Review”, issued in October 1936 by the Royal Society of Arts.

In 1939, Ewing and her husband gave a joint exhibition of their work at the Grauerholz Gallery in London and the Stucki Gallery in New York.

Ewing’s work was exhibited by the Royal Society of Arts in 1946 at the Royal Academy, London.
