The number of missing persons files in which a time-limit to search the file no longer exists is increasing.

Until recently it was very rare to find files dating back more than a year – and now files are being abandoned after a year.

Tim Brennan, Metropolitan police special crime director, told police today that more than two in three missing person files – or approx 54,000 of the 68,000 – date back more than a year.

He said this was a particular problem in British holiday locations because they are the places where people are most likely to get caught up in the crossfire between organised crime gangs and police.

Police had been working with the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) to try to engage the industry in combating crime and to get them to cooperate in investigations.

Brennan said: “It is fantastic that so many people have given up and have agreed to be interviewed.

“I feel it is a significant success and we would like to see this number rise. We are trying to put more resources into this area and to increase the number of people who come forward.

“It is not always appreciated by people that the police have to review a case if we have not had contact with the person for a year. If they go missing it can often be a matter of weeks before you find out where they are.”

The high number of files dating back to 2006 meant that more than 150,000 remained to be reviewed.

This week, Brennan said that he expected 40,000 files to be reviewed by the end of the year.

He said that he would be looking to more resources to be used in the way, including new trained staff.

He said: “There are significant gaps in the ability of police in how to investigate a missing person.

“If you go to a file and ask for a search to be done, you have to be able to have that support and that is not always the case.

“I hope that the extra resources which we have asked for over the last few years will help us to do a better job of reviewing files.”

Around 400 files dating back to 1996 are still to be reviewed.

Almost 8,000 files, dating back to 1989, also need to be revisited to see if there is any

java servlet access to local path

I am doing some self-education project of a web application, I am stuck in a servlet that I need to access a.properties file located in the class directory.
How should I access this file? I tried to save my.properties file in a bin directory but the servlet seem to search for it in the WEB-INF folder.
