But Peter wasnot afraid at all, and he knew that with Watch and hard work, thesheep would not get lost. And now the sheep, who had never beenin the woods before, began to like to walk out there. One day a wolfcame and killed one of the sheep. It was the only one that was lost,but it made Peter feel sorry that the sheep was dead, even for anevil dog.
Once, after Peter had gone for his sheep to the pasture, he wasafraid he would have to go back at night, for the shepherd dog did notlike the dark. So he decided to go very early in the morning. Butwhen he woke up, the shepherd dog seemed more worried than usual,and Peter felt sorry that he should be so worried about somethingthat could not happen. He felt and somehow knew that the shepherddog liked to be with the sheep and that the dog did not like tostay alone in the house. So Peter got up and went with him down tothe pasture, but still the dog insisted that they were too nearthe town and that they should go back. They came out of the woodsand looped back before they were lost, but the dog suddenly vanished.Peter started to cry, for he feared the dog was in trouble, but hequickly noticed that the dog did not like to go back into the woodsso he went on alone. Peter was afraid he would get lost, but nowhe liked to walk into the woods.
Peter played and played, and sang at the top of his voice all theway till he came to a stream of pure water — a river in fact.He went on playing and singing as if there were no one else in theworld but he and his sheep.
